Diseases of the periodontal tissues are the most frequent reason for tooth loss after the age of 35. These infectious diseases are quite epidemic all over the world.

How do you catch a periodontal infection?
Minutes after you cleaned your teeth colonization of the tooth surface with in the first instance harmless bacteria starts, plaque is formed. Under advantageous conditions the ''enemy'' proliferates enormously and recruits aggressive partners. This Armada manages to break through the borders your body builds up against those invaders, they reach the deeper spheres of the periodontal tissues and keep on damaging their host. The periodontal pocket is now established, filled with inflamed ,infected tissue. Therapy is urgently needed.

So, what are the aims of periodontal therapy regimens?

  • removal of plaque/calculus
  • bacterial reduction
  • removal of infected tissue
  • elimination of inflammation
  • prevention of further plaque formation
  • regeneration of periodontium

How is Laser assisted periodontal therapy carried out?
First concrements in the periodontal pocket have to be removed in the conventional manor with curettes and scalers to enable the transportation of the laser light into the deep pockets. Now laser light can be used to eradicate the bacterial flora in the affected tissues. This sort of light manages to penetrate tissues to a depth that can never been reached by usual rinsing and disinfecting methods. Even bacteria that withstand UV-light and sterilization with intensive chemicals are destroyed by lasers without further harm for the dental tissues.

Can Lasers support surgical periodontal therapy?
If the periodontal pockets have reached a certain depth your dentist will suggest surgical therapy. After preparation of the periodontium and manual removal of the infected granulation tissue lasers are used for the same reasons as in conservative treatment. They eradicate the remaining bacteria to prevent an exacerbation of the disease.

How can you keep the sanity of your periodontal tissues and avoid re-infection?
Following a successful therapy you will be asked to join in a recall program at your dentists. Three times a year you should have a session with a professional dental hygienist. He/she will evaluate the state of your periodontal tissues and so give you the chance to react on the first signs of upcoming disease.
