PAIN The appearance and severity of postoperative pain could be evaluated from patients" reports. Of the 2330 operations 70 4 patients (3 0.2 %) required pain relief on the day of surgery, but 247 of them (10. 6 %) took medication on the subsequent day ( Table 8 . ). From day 3, only 66 patients (2.8%) required analgesics. OEDEMA The patients had no difficulty in swallowing. On the operative day, they could already take oral nourishment 704 patients (30%) with analgesics, 1 626 (70%) without the use of analgesics.
